We live in a globalization era. Globalization and anti-globalization processes are influencing every aspect of our lives and futures. Drawing upon the fields of history, anthropology, geography, sociology, cultural studies, urban studies, and global studies, this course provides a relatively comprehensive introduction to contemporary social science literatures of globalization. Specifically, the course is divided into two parts: 1) the history of globalization in the past 400 years, and 2) the five key dimensions of globalization and the now hotly debated Belt & Road initiative. Through such discussions and related research exercises, it is expected that students will develop a historical, geographical, and holistic perspective on the various economic, social, cultural, political, and ecological issues that are shaping the world and a critical understanding of how global dynamics impact local development and individual lives and how people at different localities “embrace” or “resist” globalization through various strategies. The course will prepare students to be a better global citizen.
