This course includes two parts: overview of song lyric in literary history and close reading of lyric works. It will make students know the history of lyric development, and acquire the ability of reading and appreciating the classical lyrics by completing this course. Furthermore, it will improve the capacity of students’ independent thinking and expressing.<br/>This course is based on the formation, development, evolution, declining and revival of song lyric. The lecture will be given on representative authors and analyzing their works in different time. Students can learn the general development history of song lyric and command the method of appreciation and analysis. Song lyrics present different characters in different era from late Tang and five dynasties to late Qing and the Republic of China. In this course, some other topics will be involved, like lyric collection, school of song lyrics, tune patterns, lyric criticism and remarks on the lyric and so on. These will make us analyze the lyrics from other perspectives. When we analyze the obscure lyrics, we will refer its English translation.<br/>This course will be carried out in Chinese and use English materials as reference. On top of meeting the basic attendance requirement, the students are expected to actively engage in reading required materials and discussing with teacher and students about what you think in classes. The assessment of the coursework mainly consists of the grades based on the group reports which take place from the seventh week on, and those based on the final paper which is at least 2000 characters. All of these need students’ independent and critical thinking.<br/>
