This course 3D Printing of Functional Soft Materials: Fundamentals, Engineering and Applications is designed for junior undergraduates. It is aimed to enable students with backgrounds in mechanical engineering, robotics, aerospace engineering, materials science and engineering, microelectronics, or biomedical engineering to master the fundamentals of 3D printing technologies of soft materials, as well as the engineering and applications of these 3D-printed functional materials. This course will start with brief introduction to the chemical and physical aspect of soft materials, followed by the challenges for those traditional processing of soft materials, as well as merits originated from those 3DP techniques. It will systematically introduce the basic principles for various 3D printing techniques for functional soft materials, as well as fundamentals behand the printing techniques of soft materials. In additional to lectures in classroom, laboratorial skills on 3D printing of functional soft materials will also be delivered. Students are supposed to understand “what is soft material 3D printing for?” “how are soft materials 3D printing used?” by learning to solve those grand challenges in our society via the design and 3DP engineering of emerging soft materials.
