Via classroom teaching, students will learn basic information about cancer, including cancer incidence and mortality, histopathologic and clinical features of cancer, and biological hallmarks of cancer. Students will then grasp concepts and principles of cancer biology, including cancer cell immortalization, proliferation, and survival; oncogenes; tumor suppressor genes; causes of cancer, DNA damage and repair, and genetic/epigenetic alterations; chemical carcinogenesis and multistep and multifactor nature of cancer; physical and biological carcinogenesis; hereditary factors in cancer development; invasion and cancer metastasis; tumor microenvironment and immune evasion; omics and cancer signaling network; stem cells and the cellular origin of cancer; other hallmarks of cancer – angiogenesis and cancer metabolism; cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment; and cancer prevention.
