MAT8033 Big Data Analytics and ApplicationsThis is a graduate level course for students interested in data analysis and its manifold applications in the industry. The course is tailored for students interested in practical applications of data science, and the students will conduct and present independent research projects. Starting from basic descriptive statistics, we will progress towards more involved techniques such as machine learning and natural language processing. In the first part of this course, we will provide an overview of the basic methodologies to deal with big data, and we will explain their applications in the industry. A particular focus is on the financial industry, where the integration of big data is at a particularly advanced state. In the second part of the course, students will analyze data themselves in order to gain insights on actual problems. The analysis and results will be presented and discussed in class. Basic understanding of probability theory, statistics and programming will be assumed. Code templates will be provided in python, but other programming languages are accepted to solve the exercises and projects.
