Sex, Sexuality, and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary area that analyzes gender issues and related topics in connection with other structures of power. This course provides intersectional, interdisciplinary and transnational perspectives, addressing the tenacity of gendered power relations and gender inequalities in different cultures and societies. This course is divided into three parts. The first part is theories and thoughts of gender studies, sorting out the historical development and practical movement of feminism and introducing the feminist theories of different stages and different schools. The second part is social and cultural criticism, dealing with three major social issues to analyze, which are marriage and fertility, social justice, and labor issues. The third part selects five frontier topics to explore, which are gender and race, gender and media, gender and sound, gender and STS, and gender and environment. In addition to teaching specific theories and research methods in gender studies, this course provides a way to understand the ideologies, power structure and social patterns that shape our world. Understanding social gender is a way and method to understand the individual herself/himself, the social environment and the cultural context in which the individual is located, and to understand the others. Each student will conduct a case study and make a presentation. At the end of the semester, students will submit a paper analyzing a related topic of their choosing and demonstrating their understanding of the course.
