Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an emerging new technology used to process geographic (spatial) information which makes up 80% of information associated with humans. GIS is becoming increasing important for a variety of fields ranging from physical to social sciences with excellent prospects of job opportunities. This is an ice breaking course on Geographic Information Systems for undergraduate students and covers the basic theoretical/conceptual aspects that underpin Geographic Information Systems. The topics include nature of geographic information, the representation, analysis, and presentation of geographic information. As a way to solidify the concepts and techniques learned in this class, students, under the supervision of the instructors, will be developing a Web GIS mobile app for smart phones in Wechat for story telling of human mobility (human activities over space, such as travel stories).
