Continuum mechanics deals with the analysis of the kinematics and the mechanical behavior of materials that can be modeled as a continuous mass. This is an important course in Geophysics study because most earth’s materials can be considered as a continuous material. Also, the research on earth resources, natural hazards as well as a lot of geophysical phenomena relies on the understanding of the mechanical behavior of rocks. This course aims to teach the fundamental theory of continuum mechanics and prepare students for study of the major core courses of ESS.
