DS345.Sound Design (3)This course takes thestudents on a journey into the realm of the sonic. As something that is quitealways around us and yet often remains underinterrogated, students learn aboutthe emotional, narrative, social, and informative potential that sound has incontemporary media applications and beyond. This course focuses on sound as amalleable, raw material that we cancraft, and that we cancraft with– that is, sound as an opportunity for design. Students will learn to generatesound from scratch with synthesis, and by so doing, will develop criticallistening skills, a vocabulary to analyze sound & affect, and will sharpentheir skill to imagine auditory worlds for their future projects. The gainedskill will help students more critically design intangible, socially engagingexperiences in their life as designers. Beyond understanding the basicprinciples of acoustics, sound generation, composition, and audio editing, thiscourse also surveys contemporary opportunities for the delivery of sound indigital media. The students will engage in English-language classroomdiscussion, will work both individually and in groups, and they will develop,produce and deliver a large-scale sound design project of their own choosingthat is relevant to their design activities outside of this course.Skills: composition,sound generation, editing
