In our ever more scientific activity today, a philosophical and logical thinking has become one of the basic tools and core competence for scientists. This case applies to their understanding of Chinese traditional philosophy as fundamental to scientific investigation in China and beyond. With analytical essay assignments (1,500 words twice, demonstrating deductive validity of an argument), this course will provide students with comparative and deeper knowledge of Chinese philosophy, regardless of their prior learning. By ‘Chinese philosophy’, the instructor will highlight two of the major thoughts: Buddhist (Part I) and Daoism (Part II). Whilst the instructor would touch on Confucianism, he will cultivate the way of philosophizing the two Chinese thoughts in comparison to a Western/European way of philosophizing or logical thinking. The latter way is the instructor’s primary expertise in the field of early modern European philosophy, such as Descartes’s scepticism (Part I) and Leibniz’s metaphysics (Part II). On the other hand, the instructor has been teaching and publishing in the field of Eastern/Asian philosophy including Chinese thoughts. Thus, it is a good opportunity for SUSTech students to learn a philosophical analysis by sharpening their knowledge of Chinese philosophy and opening out a global approach to comparative philosophy. Overall, the 16 lectures shall shine a new light on comparative philosophy in the context of China.
