This course introduces theemerging interdisciplinary discipline of synthetic biology. Here, biology, engineering and mathematics are tightly integrated. The emergence of syntheticbiology is a logical result of the rapid development of bioinformatics andsystems biology that molecular biology has experienced for more than half acentury, especially since the implementation of the human genome and ModelOrganism genome project. Building on our deep understanding of the phenomena oflife, synthetic biology seeks to design and construct engineered biologicalsystems that can process information, manipulate compounds, manufacturematerials, produce energy, provide food, maintain and enhance human health andimprove our environment. Therefore, synthetic biology is not only a science, but also a technology, it is a new generation of biotechnology after geneticengineering, representing a new commanding height of the development ofbiotechnology.
