This course studies how the large-scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scale properties. It covers crystal structure, wave diffraction and reciprocal lattice, crystal binding, crystal vibrations, thermal properties, Fermi electron gas, energy bands, semiconductor crystals, and Fermi surfaces. After learning this course, students should be familiar with the relationship between the phenomena of solids and the physical principles behind these phenomena.
