Chinese characters is a very distinctive writing system in the world. According to archaeological materials, it has been in use for more than 3,300 years since the oracle bone inscriptions were found in Yinxu. As one of the important symbols of Chinese civilization, writing carries many qualities of Chinese culture. More importantly, writing is the key to understanding, studying and comprehending Chinese civilization. This course will systematically introduce the development process of ancient Chinese characters and introduce the important events related to it. And important written materials from each stage will be selected to lead the students to work together to recognize and read the characters. Moreover, the course will demonstrate through case studies the important role played by the study of writing in historical research, social development and even the formation of national consciousness. These contents will guide students to correctly recognize the development trend of characters and understand the history, rationality and inevitability of simplified characters. This will also enhance the students' identity and confidence in Chinese characters and Chinese culture.
