"Materialsand devices for information storage” is one major elective course for year 3students. The course aims to introduce the basic principle for informationstorage, the mainstream memory architecture, the requirements of materials onspecific type of storage applications, and emerging storage technologies fromthe materials perspective. It covers following topics: the memory architecture, volatile memory and non-volatile memory technology design and requirements, theemerging memory technologies, including phase change memory, resistive switchingmemory, spintronic memory and ferroelectric memory. Through this course, thestudents will understand the basics memory architecture and their materialsrequirements and limitations of mainstream technologies, the materials requirements, and parameters for different types of emerging memory technologies. This courseserves a preparation course for graduate studies or research and developmentwork specialized in future memory technologies.
