Crystalline materials are the basis for research in fieldsof materials science, condensed matter physics and solid-state chemistry. It isnot only important for investigation of fundamental physical properties, butalso important for applications (eg. Single crystal silicon is the basis of ourelectronic devices). This lecture will start from basic principles of crystalgrowth and common preparation techniques, including solid-state reactionroutes, crystal growth from vapor phases, liquid solutions and the melts. Thislecture will also introduce common techniques for crystal structurecharacterization and research frontiers related to crystal growth. By takingthis course, students will grasp the basic knowledge and common methods formaterials synthesis and this will be helpful for their research work.
