Microbial Oceanography studies the biology and ecology of marine microorganisms in the context of physical and chemical oceanic processes. The class strives to understand the role of microorganisms in the structure and function of marine ecosystems comprehensively. The class will teach students the abundance, diversity and metabolic activities of microorganisms in the marine ecosystems and try to answer what roles that microbes play in global biogeochemical cycles, energy transduction and related ecosystem processes. The class also enhances our comprehensive understanding of ocean chemistry and physics as well as its geology/biology.
