Thiscourse is designed for university students who are preparing to write researchproposals, academic papers or graduation theses/dissertations using the Englishlanguage. It is an intermediate-advancedlevel course that is meant to give students an understanding on how to conductacademic research using a variety of different approaches and methodologies,how to cite references properly according to the field and study they arewriting for, how to complete a standard research proposal and academic paper inEnglish.In order to graduatefrom most degree programs, a research-based thesis/dissertation is usuallyrequired to demonstrate a student’s knowledge on a given subject. This course will help students becomefamiliar with the theoretical framework needed to conduct said research usingacademic English and creating a basic proposal and academic paper that areacceptable for the completion of their studies. This course will take adevelopmental approach to understanding and exploring language in the designand writing of English. Linguisticalparadigms will be identified and used to better ensure students’ understandingof the knowledge learned. This coursewill also be project based and include both individual (research proposal) andteam learning (group academic paper) projects. Visits to the library, laboratories and other locations will be plannedto help students receive practical and hands-on experience as well asinteraction with people in various fields of study.Students from variousacademic backgrounds will get a chance to work with each other to see howlanguage affects different fields and how they are all connected viainterpersonal communication.
