SUSTech English I (SE 1) is the first and the elementary course in the Center for Language Education core curriculum. The course aims to improve the accuracy, fluency, and overall communicative competence of students for their university career. In this course, students are given plenty of opportunities to practice their oral English and communicative skills both in and beyond the classroom. By engagement in meaningful discussions in-class about various well-selected topics, students are able to gain confidence gradually as English speakers. Moreover, throughout the course, students are required to complete group projects, which motivate English utilization outside of classroom. To achieve its mission, writing practice in this course is focused on paragraphs. Following the steps of collaborative writing, independent writing, and reflective writing, with responsibilities added along the way, the course not only helps students to become better writers but also builds the character of an independent and responsible scholar.
