This course examines environmental policies and governance systems at various geopolitical scales. It considers the roles of governmental, inter-governmental, non-governmental, private sector, community, consumer, and other actors in environmental governance. The course begins with a survey of the interrelated fields of global environmental politics, dispute resolution, international trade and environmental values; and continues with the Chinese environmental governance system as well as environmental agenda setting, policy instruments and policy implementation at the domestic level. The course also discusses the development and prospects of Chinese environmental NGOs and public participation in environmental governance. In addition to the lectures, each student writes a short essay on required topics; these essays serve as the starting point for class discussions. At the end of the semester, students submit a medium-length paper communicating their research findings and analysis of a related topic of their choosing.
