The purpose of this course is to examine different ways that the English language is used and understood in the U.S. from a cinematic perspective, and how it pertains to the American “Melting Pot” culture. Focus includes examining how English is expressed through various films that are culturally themed such as: Native American English; Chicano American English; European American English; African American English; and Asian American English. Integrating different cinematic genres and the colloquialisms that are associated within their films, this course will provide cultural as well as a linguistical understandings of the American language and society. Supervised film viewing sessions will be required. The course will provide an environment where students are encouraged to explore different language usages, societal norms, and culturally acceptable (and unacceptable) ways of expression.Students from various academic and cultural backgrounds will have the opportunity to work together and see how their understandings of American language and culture are influenced by cinema.
